How To Plan For Installing VOIP In A Single Or Multiple Location Company

The first step is deciding when/if it might check broadband connection speed beneficial to move from a traditional voice network to a converged network. Each company is different, but two key indicators are intra-site call charges broadband cable phone the need for a more agile telephony system geographically (eg. distributed call centres). For many companies the cost of converting is too high to balance the cost savings. Simply changing your voice supplier might be easier and generate better cost savings.

At the moment the whip hand is with PABX manufacturers moving into the tmnet streamyx login market, rather than the IP hardware vendors moving into voice - but the hardware market is far from dominated by any single player. IP-enabling an existing PABX infrastructure is often the way forward in conjunction with planning your WAN carefully. This would suggest going for a PABX specialist for this element. If Cisco (et al) is your bag, then look for IPT accreditation and keep an eye on references and proof.

Be cautious about accepting too pat technical information from sales people. QoS is tm net my mail strictly necessary to carry voice and can carry quite a cost premium. Neither are uncontended DSL services strictly necessary. We have people running 3-4 voice channels concurrently between sites on standard contended ADSL (20:1) with simple packet prioritisation streamyx dsn the edge to protect the voice from e-mails and printing traffic.

There's no single solution. Find a solution provider that you can work with, with track record. Carefully consider the costs of change against the cost benefits as they are often not clear. Ensure you consider UPS protection for IP equipment essential for voice delivery - or have a back up analogue telephone option.

Before simply installing VOIP... take a step back and look at the larger communications picture in your single or multiple location company. You will see a number of Horizontal Communications paths:

ACCESS / BANDWIDTH

MAIL & GROUPWARE/FTP

IMS to provide

- CHAT (IM/Online Presence)

- Voice+ (SDP/SIP/etc.)

Presence... the users "online reachability"... is the empirical parameter.

Companies often DIY their email/IM/Voice systems & protection schema's, but these exist as industry standard solutions today... malaysia tour guide not outsource that effort to an Industry leading Service Solution provider & then just focus on the business?

Your biggest challenge is actually to find a Hosted Service Provider who is already on the Convergence Path (there are VERY few)... A Service provider who offers "Presence" (user log on/reachability status) similar to the MSN/ICQ/AIM/YIM/Skype. A service provider who offers this, can

1) bill you appropriately for "online reachability" rather than the call-by-call (or monthly subscription) basis...

2) offer not just secured VOIP, but also IM/Mail/Video/Collaboration/etc. via SIP on an IMS infrastructure.

If you have day to day responsibility for the operation of a multi-location VoIP network - there are some issues to be aware of.

1) It's not as cheap as vendors want you to believe

2) Legacy equipment manufacturers do not have the best products and may not be the best solution. Remember the old adage about IBM from the 60's.... "no one was ever fired for buying IBM". Now it seems to be buying Cisco or Nortel kit is the "safe" option.

3) There is a support cost that older management types will not dsl broadband or possibly understand. That the LAN just became extremely important in the overall communication infrastructure. It isn't just for e-mail anymore.

No matter your final decision....keep in mind that everyday is an adventure. Be careful - be wary and test, test and test again.

Network capability
The top speed of your connection will be limited by the maximum speed of the mobile phone company's network. In the UK, O2, Orange tmnet streamyx T-Mobile support 1.8Mbps, Three support 2.4Mbps and Vodafone support speeds up to 7.2Mbps.

However, it's one thing for the network to theoretically support these higher speeds, but if the link from the mobile phone company's mast back to the internet (called 'backhaul') isn't fast enough you won't be able to hit the higher speeds. This is similar to having a 54Mbps WiFi router at home, but connecting it to an 8Mbps ADSL connection - you speed is limited by the slowed link in the chain.

Modem capability
Mobile broadband modems come in a variety of different speeds - from basic 3.6Mbps devices through to the fastest 7.2Mbps with support for high speed uploads. If your phone company offers 7.2Mbps broadband, but you've only got a 3.6Mbps modem, you won't be able to hit the higher speeds.

Looking beyond just the speed of the modem, it's important to consider the technology inside the modem itself. Of particular importance is a technology called receive diversity - modems that support this feature have two internal aerials instead of one, making them a lot quicker, especially in poor coverage areas.

Signal strength
The speed of your connection is affected by the strength of the signal you receive from your mobile phone company's network. The poorer your signal strength, the slower your connection. The software included with your modem will show you what your signal strength is - this is similar to the bar indicator you have on your mobile phone.

If your in an visit malaysia of poor or no 3G coverage, your modem will switch to use the much slower 2G network - instead of receiving speeds of 1.8Mbps, you'll be crawling along at just 30Kbps. The modem software or the lights on the modem itself will tell you if you're using 3G or 2G.

You can improve your signal strength by moving your modem. Try moving closer to a window (as the signal can pass through glass more easily than walls), or try moving the first floor of your home or office. You might kuala lumpur singapore a USB extension cable useful.

You may notice that the strength of your signal changes throughout the day - this is called the 'breathing' effect of 3G networks. As the network gets busier, the coverage area shrinks, isp speed test you'll see your signal strength reduce too.

Number of other users on the network
The speed of your connection will be reduced during busy periods on the mobile network. When you cheap wireless broadband using mobile broadband, you're using a shared data service. This means although your data is secure, the 'pipe' that you're using is also used by other people on the network. As more people go online and start downloading using the same pipe, the speed each user receives cable internet speed test It's similar to the difference between driving on motorway at 2am versus 6pm.

As odd as it sounds, the number of customers making voice calls will also have an impact on your speed. This is because voice customers take priority over data customers on the network and during busy times voice customers are allowed to access the network ahead of data customers.

In general, the busiest time to use mobile broadband is between 6pm and 11pm - during this you'll find your speed much slower than using it first thing in the morning.

Our solution, if you go the free route, is to use at least two products, like Adaware and Spybot. What one misses, the other gets, and vice versa. They also remove the spyware that they find.

Once all of the spyware has been removed from your system, the next prudent step to take would be to inoculate your PC against future infections. This is easier said than done. The anti-spyware product, as they're commonly known, must stay one or two steps ahead of the spyware authors. And it's hard to prevent as-yet-unknown methods (i.e., new methods) before they are devised.

One of the best tools out there for blocking spyware is Spyware Doctor. There is a free and a pay version. The free version scans and removes spyware and it's highly rated, being chosen by PC World as the best anti-spyware malacca malaysia available; the pay for version blocks spyware, too.

Use your Computer to make Cheap Long-Distance Telephone Calls

What is VoIP?

Simply put, VoIP refers visit kuala lumpur melaka carriage of voice signals over the Internet. PC to Phone VoIP refers to using your 'Internet-connected' computer to make calls to conventional telephones around the world. Whereas traditional telephone calls take place over fixed line circuit switched?networks, VoIP calls are routed through the Internet using a far more efficient method known tm net streamyx packet switching? Whilst carrying voice data more efficiently via the Internet is a benefit, the main advantage telekom VoIP has is one of cost. For example, a typical PC to Phone VoIP call to a telephone in the United States from anywhere in the world generally runs at just a few cents per minute. Keep in mind, the clarity/quality of PC to Phone calls is usually as good and in many cases better than that of a comparable Phone to Phone call.

How can it be so cheap?

Herein lies the beauty of PC to Phone calls. By using the Internet to route your calls, long-distance charges imposed upon you by the major telecommunications companies (Bell, Sprint, AT&T, etc) are all but eliminated. Furthermore, many of the governmental levies and fees associated with using the highly regulated traditional?telephone networks are also avoided. The result? Extremely cheap, long distance calling to conventional telephones around the world with little or no loss of call quality.

So how does it work?

In a typical PC to Phone call, your computer receives your voice input via a microphone and then translates your voice into a data packet? This packet of data is then transmitted via the Internet to as close as possible to the physical destination of the telephone youre calling. Your voice data packet?is then switched to the conventional telephone network and routed to the phone that you are calling. All of this data transmission, translation and switching takes place transparently and extremely quickly. Chances are that the person whom youre calling would have no idea that youre talking to them using your computer.

So what do you need?

In order to start making long-distance telephone calls using your computer, youll need a computer thats connected to the Internet, a microphone and speakers (a headset with a boom microphone is ideal). Its worth mentioning that although there are several companies that support both the Linux and Macintosh platforms (e.g., www.skype.com), the vast majority of PC to Phone software is designed for use on Windows?compatible PCs. As far as your Internet connection goes, the faster the better (e.g., high speed Cable or ADSL). However, PC to Phone does also work on dial-up Internet connections (the way I access the Internet).

The next thing to do is choose a PC to Phone Service Provider. These are the companies that provide the software and infrastructure necessary for you to make calls to conventional telephones via the Internet. There are many Service Providers and each have their own benefits and rates so its a good idea to shop around. Almost all of them allow for pay-as-you-go usage (i.e., on a per minute basis) however some also offer unlimited calling plans to certain destinations for a low monthly fee. Some of the better known Providers include

net2phone.com

iconnecthere.com

skype.com

Once youve fiber internet a Service Provider, youll need to open an account and deposit funds into that account. If youre reluctant to use your credit card online, many of the PC to Phone companies offer alternative forms of payment (e.g., PayPal, direct deposit, wire transfer, etc.). Next, youll need to download the softphone?application from your service provider. A softphone is merely the interface program through which you dial the number of the person youre calling and usually only takes a few minutes to download on even the slowest dial-up?Internet connections. Softphones generally resemble the keypad on conventional telephones and work in much the same way. Depending on your service provider, the manner in which you dial out?will vary. Typically, the softphone will take into account where you are in the world and adjust the dialing settings accordingly. In other words, youd dial the exact same series of numbers into the softphone that you would if you were using a conventional telephone.

Once youve made a few calls to friends and family around the world using your computer, youll quickly realize the fantastic cost advantages of making PC to Phone?calls versus Phone to Phone?calls.

So whats the catch?

Whilst PC to Phone is terrific, it isnt perfect. There are some disadvantages that you should be streamyx vpn of and these include:

a) Quality: If you access the Internet via a dial-up?connection (i.e., through a normal telephone line), you may experience call quality degradation if you are surfing the web and talking to someone via PC to Phone at the same time. In other words, the bandwidth?or capacity of your Internet connection?may be limited and this could affect your calling ability.

b) Echo: If youre using computer speakers to hear the person youre talking to, that person may hear an echo?of their own voice. This happens for reasons similar to that encountered with the speakerphone?function on conventional telephones. At the same time as you hear that persons voice coming through your computer speakers, your microphone will also detect the voice and re-transmit the signal back to the person youre talking to. This echo?can easily be avoided by using either a computer headset or by turning your speaker volume down so as to minimize the chance of your microphone picking up and retransmitting the incoming voice signals.

c) Cost: If youre calling relatively small and/or remote countries, you should check the rates of the PC to Phone Service Providers?to those countries before signing up for their PC to Phone service. For example, calling a country like jalan ipoh in the Pacific Ocean is almost as expensive using PC to Phone as it is using a conventional telephone. The reason for these high rates to certain countries is usually due to the PC to Phone Service Provider not having the necessary switching equipment (required for switching your call back to the traditional telephone network from the Internet) physically located in that country. In these scenarios, your calls are routed through the traditional telephone network for a good proportion of the distance they travel and as such they high speed internet services many of the long-distance charges that the traditional networks impose. If youd like to call one country in particular, its definitely worth shopping around to find out whether prospective PC to Phone companies have the necessary switching equipment located in that country (and hence, can pass on the savings to you in the form of cheaper rates).

So give PC to Phone a try. Youve really nothing to lose and have the potential to save yourself a lot of money.
